HSK is the abbreviation of Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì ( in Chinese 汉语水平考试), translated as the Chinese Proficiency Test or the Chinese Standard Exam. HSK is China’s only internationally standardized test that tests and rates Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers. The test is administered by Hanban, an agency of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. Therefore the certificate of the HSK Test is officially recognized in China, especially for work or admission to university.

The HSK –system has two types of tests: one test for listening, reading and writing (HSK), another test for speaking (HSKK). These two tests are independent of each other. There are six levels of the first type of test, namely the HSK 1, HSK 2, HSK 3, HSK 4, HSK 5 and HSK 6 .  There are three levels of speaking tests, namely the HSKK Beginner, HSKK Intermediate, and HSKK Advanced. The six levels of HSK are equal to the six levels of  CEFR or CEF (Common European Framework of  Reference) for European languages.
